Urgent warning to Sligo locals as emergency services rush to fire outbreak involving asbestos

Households and businesses in the Larkhill area of Sligo are being urged to keep their windows and doors open after a fire involving asbestos broke out in the area.

Larkhill Road in Sligo is closed in both directions this morning as emergency services deal with a fire that broke out in the early hours of the morning.

The Fire Brigade says people should keep windows and doors shut because of the presence of asbestos fibres in the air, after a blaze that broke out in a shed at a domestic premises, RTE News reports.

The situation has been described as a "full house hazard chemical incident".

Both Gardai and the Fire Brigade are on the scene this morning, hours after the break broke out shortly before 5am.

And a warning from AA Roadwatch, issued this morning, cautions motorists to take care in the area because the presence of smoke may be affecting visibility.

Diversions are in place.
