Urgent warning to check your change for fake fivers

These are the fake £5 notes currently alleged to be doing the rounds in Wirral.

A victim posted this video in a local Crimewatch group - which shows the ink coming off the notes as easily as a scratchcard when rubbed with a coin.

Richie Hendren got these in his change in Eastham, and said he had heard of others who had fallen foul of the counterfeit cash.

He added: "I've had three now. They feel slightly more 'plasticy' if that makes sense plus the ink very easily comes off when scratched with a coin like a scratchcard.

"A friend showed me one, then I got then two in my change yesterday.

"The ink comes off so easy and they are hard to spot as well."

Genuine £5 notes are made of wear-resistant polymer and have a number of security features built in to prevent fraud - for example, a silver foil patch with a hologram of the word 'Five' which changes to the word 'Pounds' when tilted.

Police said nobody had yet come forward to make a report to them.

A force spokesperson said: "Local shopkeepers and members of the public are reminded to be extra vigilant when dealing with bank notes. If unsure, they should check the notes by whatever means available to them, and follow the guidance on the Bank of England website.

"If you suspect that you have a counterfeit banknote, please take it to your nearest police station. The police should fill out an NCO-1 form and provide you with a receipt and incident number."
