Urgent warning to anyone travelling to Formby beach and woods this weekend

People travelling to the beach over the weekend are being urged to use public transport, rather than drive.

This morning, a National Trust spokesperson warned that car parks on Formby beach are already filling up and likely to close for the day.

Good weather regularly brings thousands of visitors to the area of Merseyside, but it often causes chaos on the roads.

Last month, more than 100 tickets were handed out after a police patrol was dispatched to deal with concerns over parking.

The tickets were issued after the car parks became full before 11am, so drivers parked in residential areas instead.

Now when the weather heats up, residents, the emergency services and National Trust staff urge visitors to use public transport to avoid heavy traffic and blocking roads.

Today a post on the National Trust Formby Facebook page reads: "Both car parks are filling up quickly and likely to close soon for the rest of the day. This is to keep everyone wandering across site safe.

"Please travel by train, use local cycle routes or perhaps plan your visit for a quieter day.

"Thank you for your support. Together we can have a safe and enjoyable bank holiday weekend."
