Urgent warning over council house scam on social media: Tech & Science Daily podcast

The Standard’s Chief Political Correspondent, Rachael Burford, tells Tech & Science Daily how a warning has been issued over a council house scam on social media, which has seen victims hand over thousands of pounds to secure social housing that doesn’t exist.

The scammers advertise houses and flats in certain boroughs for rent with dubious adverts which promise a cut price for the properties, and ask people to contact them via WhatsApp for more information. They claim that they can move people into a home within 12 months.

Once contacted and payment made, the fraudsters then say they’re able to help with social housing applications, including uploading fake documents for those who do not meet the criteria or are not entitled to social housing.

Findings suggest that global life expectancy is to increase by nearly five years by the year 2050.

The forecast indicates that between 2022 and 2050, the life expectancy for men is expected to increase from 71.1 years to 76 years, and for women to go from 76.2 years to 80.5 years.

According to the Global Burden of Disease Study 2021, from the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, countries where life expectancy is currently lower are expected to see the largest increases.

Research suggests that children who spend a lot of time on social media are ‘more likely to vape and smoke’.

A study, published in the journal Thorax, included data for more than 10,000 people aged 10 to 25 from the UK Household Longitudinal Study 2015–2021, and found that it was particularly apparent among those spending more than seven hours a day on social media.

They were found to be almost eight times more likely to smoke than non-users, and four times more likely to vape.
