Urgent warning issued to every single person with a National Insurance number

Every single person with a National Insurance number in the UK has been warned to stay vigilant after a surge in calls were reported trying to falsely steal peoples' information.

Everyone in the UK is sent a National Insurance number before their 16th birthday - the number helps with applying for jobs, and identifies you with HMRC and the DWP.

According to Manchester Evening News, Actionfraud UK has received over 1,000 complaints, in which victims reported receiving an automated telephone call, during which they are told their "National Insurance number has been compromised".

Those who have been called are then asked to "press 1 on their handset to be connected to the caller” to supposedly 'fix' the issue and get a new NI number.

However, following these instructions could lead to grim consequences.

Victims are then pressured into handing over personal details once they are connected to a 'caller' - which scammers claim is to enable them to receive a new National Insurance number.

However, giving the criminals your personal details will enable them to commit fraud using your credentials and information.

Pauline Smith, Head of Action Fraud, said: “We are asking the public to remain vigilant and be cautious of any automated calls they receive mentioning their National Insurance number becoming compromised.

“It’s important to remember if you’re contacted out the blue by someone asking for your personal or financial details, this could be a scam.

“Even confirming personal details, such as your email address, date of birth or mother’s maiden name, can be used by criminals to commit fraud.

"If you have any doubts about what is being asked of you, hang up the phone.

"No legitimate organisation will rush or pressure you.”
