Urgent warning for UK dog owners ahead of Christmas

An urgent warning has been issued to dog owners as millions prepare to celebrate the Christmas holiday this week.

While some foods like chocolate and raisins are well known for being harmful to dogs, other festive items can also cause severe sickness in canines. Some items that may easily find their way into your festive menu - such as onions and chives - can leave your pooches feeling very poorly, the MEN reports.

In an effort to raise awareness of these lesser known dangers, the Dogs Trust Manchester page shared a warning on Twitter, and a list of festive products to keep away from your pet over the Christmas period.

They wrote: "With less than a week to go until Christmas, here's some useful info to keep your dog safe this festive season!"

Here are Dogs Trust Manchester's top tips for what to avoid this Christmas:

  1. Ensure human treats are out of sight, reach and smell
  2. Don't let your dog eat Christmas cake, Christmas pudding, mince pies or chocolate
  3. Don't let your dog drink drinking chocolate, mulled wine or any alcohol
  4. Avoid onions, leeks, garlic, shallots and chives. These cause diarrhoea, vomiting and damage to red blood cells
  5. Watch out for holly berries and misletoe. These cause vomiting, diarrhea and lethargy
