Urgent warning for Irish going to Spain as brutal 40C heatwave to hit soon

Irish holidaymakers travelling to Spain in the coming days are being warned to prepare for extreme heat.

A brutal heatwave has been forecast for the tourist hotspot, with fears temperatures could reach a scorching 45C.

It comes as a plume of hot air from North Africa is expected to engulf Spain, as well as other European countries like France and Italy, within days.

Tourists from Ireland planning their sunny getaway are being urged to brace themselves for the near-unbearable heat that lies ahead.

Spain’s meteorological agency AEMET has issued ‘high temperatures’ warnings for Mallorca on Wednesday, stating that thermometers could reach 37C.

However, it has pinpointed this weekend and early next week as the exact date for even hotter temperatures, describing it as “an episode of intense heat”.

It said: “Weekend probable episode of intense heat with midsummer temperatures highs above 34C; inside south 40C.

“Minimum temperatures above 15C; in the interior south above 20C (tropical nights).

“Next week it is expected to continue.”

Further weather warnings are expected to be issued in the coming days.

Seville in southern Spain is expected to be the warmest area in Spain.According to weather.com, it will have the highest temperature of 45C on Monday, June 26.

Irish tourists holidaying in the affected regions are advised to take extra care and follow the advice of local authorities.

Meanwhile, Ireland's unsettled weather is set to continue this week, with more thunderstorms and above-average heat.

Met Eireann has issued a thunderstorm warning for the entire country that's in place until 10pm tonight.

It reads: "Heavy showers with thunderstorms likely. Possible Impacts: Spot flooding, Poor visibility, Difficult travelling conditions."
