Urgent warning for 500,000 drivers over visiting petrol stations from September

An urgent warning is being issued to more than half a million car owners who face paying £6.11 every time they fill up their cars from September.

Drivers in the UK face a big change in petrol prices from the autumn period onwards.

The Sun reports that motorists who own older vehicles could fork out as much as six pounds extra for every tank of fuel they buy.

It comes as petrol stations and garages across the country begin selling eco-friendly fuel E10 petrol, which replaces the current standard, E5.

E10 means petrol contains up to 10% renewable ethanol. To date, petrol in the UK has contained up to 5% renewable ethanol (known as E5). E10 petrol is already widely used around the world, including across Europe, the US and Australia.

New vehicles manufactured from 2019 onwards should have an ‘E10’ and ‘E5’ label close to the filler cap showing the fuel(s) they can use, reports Birmingham Live.

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said: "The next 15 years will be absolutely crucial for slashing emissions from our roads, as we all start to feel the benefits of the transition to a zero-emission future.

"Before electric cars become the norm, we want to take advantage of reduced CO2 emissions today.

"This small switch to petrol containing bioethanol at 10% will help drivers across country reduce the environmental impact of every journey."

Robin Wright, secretary general of environmental campaign groups ePURE, said: "Displacing 10% of Europe’s petrol with ethanol through E10 fuel, a fuel widely available in France, Finland and Germany, would reduce greenhouse gas emissions from petrol vehicles by over 6%.

"But more ambition and greater use of ethanol is needed. Brazil currently mixes its petrol with up to 28% ethanol, so why not Europe?"
