Urgent selfie warning as social media addicts flock to cliff edge for perfect snap

An urgent selfie warning has been by issued after social media addicts flocked to a scenic cliff edge for the perfect shot.

People descended on the beautiful Sydney suburb of Vaucluse after an online "influencer" shared photos of scenic Diamond Bay.

Residents say they fear for the safety of tourists who are teetering close to the cliff edge to get a picture of themselves at the historic ruins.

Emergency rescue workers have also warned against the copy-cat snappers, fearing they could be blown over the edge.

Stephen Leahy from the Westpac helicopter, warned: "Don't jump over the fence, don't ignore the signage.

“It's really easy just to take that one step to far for the perfect picture and you're in dire straits."

Resident Laura Dewitt told Australia's 9 News : "We do see a lot of tourists that come past, I believe there's a tour bus that drops off a bunch of people and it makes sense, it's super beautiful down here."

And another resident Rona Kahn, said she feared "any extreme, a wind or a stumble or anything, that's the end of them because it's sheer cliff down."

Between 2011 and 2017 there were 259 recorded 'selfie deaths,' with more than a quarter happening while the selfie-taker was engaged in what the study authors call “non-risky behavior.”

The majority of deaths involving young men appeared to have been caused by risky behavior, while the actions of over half of females who died taking a selfie were deemed “non-risky," reports Outside Online .

Among the victims was 19-year-old Gavin Zimmerman from Utah, USA, who died last July while taking photos whale watching at Cape Solander in Kurnell.

Only weeks later, 34-year-old teacher Paul Lukasiewicz lost his life in the same spot. 

Canadian rapper Jon James McMurray died that October after crawling out onto the wing of a Cessna while filming a music video.
