Urgent search for mum after newborn baby wrapped in blanket found in park

Police are urgently searching for the mother of a newborn baby boy found wrapped in a blanket in a Birmingham park.

The infant was found by a resident in a community park known locally as The Mound in Kings Norton at around 5.30pm Thursday, West Midlands Police said.

The child has been taken to hospital but police have not yet found his mother.

They say they are "extremely concerned" for her welfare and are urgently appealing for anyone who knows her to come forward.

Officers are conducting CCTV checks in the area to try and identify her, Birmingham Live reports.

It is not yet known how long the newborn was there before he was found by a member of the public.

Police said he was being checked over at a local hospital following his discovery.

Detective Inspector Allan Green, from West Midland Police's public protection unit, said: “The baby is being cared for by medical staff and our priority is to now find mum and make sure she is ok.

“She may be in need of urgent medical attention and she is our absolute priority at the moment."

He continued: "We have been checking CCTV and speaking to members of the public, but it may be that the mother or someone who knows who she is sees this appeal.

“I really want to speak to her to make sure she’s OK and would urge her to get in touch.”

Anyone with information has been asked to get in touch with West Midlands Police, quoting log 3476 of 22 April or call 101 any time.
