Urgent safety recall of children's toy sold in Ireland over 'serious' choking risk

A kids' toy has been recalled in Ireland over a 'serious' choking and injury risk posed to toddlers.

The Jelly Growing Sea Life Creatures expandable toy has been identified as a "potential choking hazard" by the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission.

The product is a pack of 24 jelly sea life creatures, which begin to expand when placed in water.

However, experts fear that young children could take the toy from water and put it in their mouth, which could see the product block their airway as it continues to expand.

The recall says the toy poses a risk to very young children under the age of 36 months.

The toys were sold on Amazon, and it is understood that just over 50 units were purchased in Ireland.

A statement from the CCPC states: "A safety issue has been identified, whereby, it is possible that this product may present a serious risk to very young children (0-36 months).

"A potential choking hazard and risk of injury exists. When the toy is placed in water to expand, a young child could remove the toy from the water during the expansion process and place the toy in their mouth.

"The toy would continue to expand and could potentially cause blockage in the child’s oesophagus.

"The barcode on the product is 6948558765542 and the batch number is 2158-2.

"These products were sold online through the Amazon platform.

"Approximately 55 units of this product have been sold to consumers in the Republic of Ireland."
