Urgent recall notice issued for popular product sold in Boots, McCauley's and more Irish shops and pharmacies

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland has issued a recall of food supplements sold by many supermarkets and pharmacies due to the presence of an unauthorised pesticide.

Certain batches of Emergen-C Energy Release & Immunity Support were found to contain the presence of ethylene oxide.

Ethylene oxide is a pesticide that is not permitted for use in foods sold in the EU but is approved for use by other countries outside the EU.

The FSAI said that "although the consumption of the contaminated products does not pose an acute risk to health, there is an increased risk if there is continued consumption of ethylene oxide in contaminated food over a long period of time".

It is for this reason that exposure to ethylene oxide needs to be minimised.

The food authority said that point-of-sale recall notices will be displayed in stores supplied with the implicated batches.

The food supplements being recalled have the 'super orange' flavour, with three different packs impacted.

The 'maga pack' containing 24 sachets have a lot number FUB03 and a best before date of January 2024.

Another 'maga pack' containing 24 sachets being recalled have a lot number NT489 and a best before date of October 2023.

The third Emergen-C Energy Release & Immunity Support product being recalled comes in a pack of eight sachets, with a lot number GU393 and best before date of October 2023.
