Urgent recall for Christmas ham sold in Lidl

Lidl customers are being warned that two popular Christmas ham products have been recalled over incorrect cooking instructions.

Many households across the country will cook ham fillets over the Christmas holidays, but some ham fillets sold in Lidl contain packaging with incorrect cooking instructions. The smoked and unsmoked ham fillets were supplied to Lidl by Callan Bacon Ltd but now the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) has issued a recall notice for the products.

In a statement posted by the FSAI, it said: "Callan Bacon Ltd. is recalling Smoked 100% Irish Ham Fillet and Unsmoked 100% Irish Ham Fillet with specific barcodes due to incorrect boiling instructions detailed on the label. The implicated ham fillets were sold in Lidl stores."

The implicated batches are as follows:

  • Smoked 100% Irish Ham Fillet (3kg) barcode: 4056489711575

  • Unsmoked 100% Irish Ham Fillet (3kg) barcode: 4056489711568

According to the FSAI, recall notices will be displayed at point-of-sale.

The correct instructions for boiling are: "Place fillet in a large saucepan of water and bring to the boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 30 minutes per 500g, plus an additional 30 minutes.

"Remove fillet from the water, and allow to stand for 10 minutes before carving. Ensure food is piping hot and cooked throughout before serving."

Meanwhile, Dunnes Store also recently recalled a dinner item over concerns it may be 'unsafe' to eat. The batch of ‘Dunnes Stores Vegan Plant Based Roast’ has a number of ingredients that aren’t printed on its label.

This could make it “unsafe” to eat for those who are allergic or intolerant. The Food Safety Authority of Ireland issued a recall notice on Friday, saying there is “undeclared wheat, soy and sulphites”.
