The Australian Federal Police is conducting an urgent review into the safety of parliamentarians following the stabbing murder of British MP Sir David Amess.
Parliamentarians are at increased risk due to the number of public events they attend, Deputy Commissioner Brett Pointing said.
The AFP is looking at new ways to protect parliamentarians and political candidates ahead of the upcoming federal election.
Mr Pointing will report back to the AFP commissioner by November 11.
Options include physical protection and police liaisons.
AFP Commissioner Reece Kershaw said current police protection "tends to be almost an all-in or nothing model".
"We are looking at how could we service all parliamentarians in a better way and provide that level of reassurance," he said.
"I know a lot of the electorates receive lots of threats and concerning letters and other things."
