Urgent meeting demanded over troubled school after chaotic day of departures

There are calls for an urgent meeting to be held with the Trust behind a Merseyside school that has been rocked by the sudden departure of its headteacher, a senior director and the chair of governors.

Earlier today the ECHO reported how the executive headteacher of St John Plessington Catholic College in Bebington, Wirral had suddenly left his role on Thursday last week.

It was also revealed that on the same day, the school's operations director Sally Mitchell also left the school - with both decisions said to have been made by 'mutual consent.'

This was followed by the resignation of John Williams from his position as chair of governors - on a chaotic day that has left parents worried about what has gone wrong.

Following the dramatic news, Wirral South MP Alison McGovern has demanded an urgent meeting with Holy Family Catholic Multi-Academy Trust that runs the Bebington school.

She said: "Parents will rightly be worried about these events, and are entitled to know what is going on.

"I have requested an urgent meeting with the Trust that runs SJP so that they can explain more to me about what has happened.

"Many of my constituents study, work or are parents at SJP and the importance of this issue to our South Wirral community cannot be underestimated."

It is not clear what has prompted the mass departures. but in a statement, the Diocese said that a newly appointed chief finance officer for the trust would now be seeing the financial management of the school.

A spokesman said: “Each of these three people have given many years of service to the school and the Diocese would like to take this opportunity to wish them will for the future.

“Pupils, parents and staff can be assured that the stability and success of St John Plessington Catholic College is uppermost in the minds of Trustee Directors, Governors and the Diocese and all involved with the oversight of the school and the arrangements which are being put into place will ensure this."

“Simon Rylance, deputy head teacher at St John Plessington, has kindly agreed to become acting head teacher to ensure continuity for the school until a new appointment is made, and Emily McArdle, the vice chair of the trust, will lead the governors."

"Ian Potts, the newly appointed chief finance officer of the trust, is overseeing the financial management of all schools in the trust.”

Parents have been left worried by the dramatic developments at the school that was one of the top rated in the borough last year.

One told the ECHO: "As a parent it is very worrying, it makes you wonder what has gone on that has led to all this. They didn't all just wake up and think 'I'm going to quit today'."
