Urgent fundraiser launched by DSPCA as surrenders soar

The DSPCA has launched a fundraiser to cope with increased medical demands at their shelter.

The animal welfare group remains at capacity due to increased surrenders. Staff are more reliant than ever on public support to care for abandoned animals.

The charity needs €29,000 to buy a much needed X-Ray machine. The DSPCA's current machine is beginning to malfunction and cannot adequately care for the high proportion of animals residing at the shelter.

DSPCA's Head of Fundraising Suzanne McGovern said: "The machine is quite old and parts are beginning to fail on it. We badly need to purchase a new state of the art machine for improved diagnostics on the animals we help care for."

Suzanne estimated that the charity's intake has gone up by a staggering 40 percent in recent months. Staff are feeling the strain as the facility heaves with new additions.

The charity's tireless efforts are currently airing on RTE through a six part series. The third season of 'The Shelter: Animal SOS' gives viewers a glimpse into a typical day working at Dublin's busiest animal charity.

Suzanne added: "We rescue approximately 2,500-3,000 animals each year but it's hard to communicate the care we actually provide. We're hoping to get a fourth series because it's a lovely opportunity to show people our work."

The programme is available to view at 7pm every Tuesday on RTE One. The charity continues to reinforce their 'Adopt Don't Shop' campaign as capacity at the shelter remains high.

The DSPCA's fundraiser needs another €13,000 to meet its hefty target. Viewers can donate easily online through the charity's website and Instagram account.
