Urgent 'danger to life warning' over ice on the Pentland Hills

With Edinburgh locals in level four lockdown, and nothing much to do other than enjoy the great outdoors, there has been an influx of people travelling to the Pentland Hills for exercise.

But after temperatures dropped in the capital, bringing a blanket of snow and ice to Edinburgh, there are concerns for people's safety if they walk on ice.

Sadly the park has warned that there has been "several deaths" in the past which have occurred as a result of "people falling through ice."

Victor Partridge, Natural Heritage Officer for Pentland Hills Regional Park warned locals not to 'copy any videos they see on social media' of people taking to ice 'because it's almost impossible to tell how thick the ice really is.'

Mr Partridge released a statement on behalf of Pentland Hills Regional Park, penning: "Many of the reservoirs in the Pentland Hills Regional Park are frozen over.

"Going onto the ice or letting your dog onto the ice is very dangerous. Several deaths have occurred in the park through people falling through ice.

"By going onto the ice you are encouraging others to follow you. Ice thickness can vary greatly on reservoirs. We should all think about keeping risks low at the moment to avoid accidents which may lead to overwhelming the NHS. Please keep off frozen reservoirs."
