Urgent avalanche warning on Pentland Hills that could 'bury you'

An urgent warning has been issued after an avalanche in the Pentland Hills following heavy snowfall overnight.

Taking to social media, Tweed Valley Mountain Rescue Team shared shocking photos of the avalanche which took place at the popular beauty spot earlier today.

The emergency rescue team explained it had been a slab avalanche, this occurs when a weak layer in a snowpack breaks off as the avalanche is triggered, sweeping away the layers on top as it begins to fall down the slope.

In a statement on Facebook, they said: "Word of caution if you're doing anything off-piste in the Pentlands (or other hills).

"This is a full depth slab avalanche on the South side of Turnhouse.

"All the blown wind slab that has accumulated from recent snowfalls has only been weakly bonded to the grass beneath.

"Certainly enough to knock you off your feet, maybe enough to bury you if caught and you're unlucky! (photo taken from Penicuik)."

It comes after residents awoke to find the city covered in snow this morning following the aftermath of Storm Christoff, with the Met Office issuing a yellow weather warning across Edinburgh and the Lothians.

Chief Meteorologist Neil Armstrong, said “Storm Christoph will bring a mix of notable weather hazards across the UK over the next few days".
