Urgent appeal to get new van for Glasgow organisation giving hot meals to homeless

A homeless charity which gives out hot meals to Glasgow's homeless is asking for the public's help to give their fundraiser a final push in a bid to buy a new van.

The crowdfunder has been set up to raise the money for Help 4 the Homeless and the woman who runs the organisation, Mel Whitley.

The charity, which is based at Cadogan Street, serves meals to around 300 to 320 homeless people every Thursday, with all diets catered for, including vegetarian, gluten free and halal.

With just two days to go, the fundraiser total currently stands at around £780, shy of the £9,000 target.

As described on the crowdfunder page page: "Mel Whitley is the gem of a woman who runs Help 4 The Homeless in Glasgow.

"Every Thursday night, no matter what the weather, she sets up a kitchen in Cadogan Street, Glasgow and serves a hot meal to the homeless or to people who just need a meal. She caters for everyone: vegetarian, gluten free, halal etc.

"On an average Thursday she feeds between 300 and 320 people plus she has two teams of street volunteers who go out with food and tea and coffee.

"She cooks all of the food in her house and then transports food, tables, burners, dishes, cutlery in the back of a clapped out Fiesta. I asked her what she does if it rains or snows and her response was 'I get wet' because these people need to eat. When I mentioned that she should have gazebo's her response was that she physically can't fit any more in to the Fiesta and that feeding the homeless was more important.

"I would love to raise sufficient funds that would allow Mel to buy a van. If you think that you can help please donate."
