Urena shines as Marlins romp over Nationals, 12-1

WASHINGTON _ Jose Urena didn't hit the leadoff batter. He didn't hit any batters.

But the Marlins sure pounded Gio Gonzalez, dealing a stunning blow to the pitcher and the Nationals' playoff hopes with a crushing 12-1 win on Sunday.

The victory gave the Marlins their first series win in Washington since the 2014 season.

Urena, who was back on the mound for the first time since Wednesday when he plunked Braves rookie Ronald Acuna Jr. with the only pitch he threw, was a model of control at Nationals Park, delivering the first complete game of his career by all but shutting down the Nats and further damaging their fading postseason hopes.

Urena, who is allowed to pitch while appealing the league's six-game suspension stemming from the Acuna incident, went eight innings and held the Nationals to a run on two hits. He walked two. It was the first complete game by a Marlins pitcher that wasn't a no-hitter since Henderson Alvarez went the distance on June 3, 2014. Edinson Volquez threw a nine-inning no-hitter last season for the Marlins.

Gonzalez wasn't nearly as effective. The Marlins hammered him for eight runs as nearly every player in the lineup contributed in some manner. JT Riddle, who drove in four runs in Saturday's 10-inning win over the Nationals, remained hot Sunday by driving in three more runs and hitting his seventh home run.

Starlin Castro finished with five hits, J.T. Realmuto homered and drove in three runs, Isaac Galloway hit his first career major-league homer, and the Marlins enjoyed one of their best offensive showings in weeks. The Marlins totaled 17 hits.

The back-to-back wins for the Marlins are their first since July 28-29.
