Urban Meyer top target for USC per report from Stadium

Just when you thought Stadium’s Brett McMurphy was done with Urban Meyer news, you’re wrong. According to a Tweet McMurphy sent out on Friday, USC will be targeting Urban Meyer as their No. 1 option in the search for a new head coach.

Now, before we put the horse before the sword (or something like that) consider that current Trojan head coach Clay Helton is still running the show in Southern California. However, support is wearing thin for Helton as USC continues to try and get back to the prominence it has been used to. This year will likely be another in which USC doesn’t get to Pasadena or beyond, and there could be a change made soon.

Time will tell.

According to McMurphy, sources close to the situation have gone on record to state that Myer is “undoubtedly” USC’s No. 1 choice, and that it will do “whatever it takes to get him.”

But is he interested?

Meyer (and his wife Shelley) appears to be happen with where is life is right now. He’s got a great gig with FOX College Football, has several things going on outside of football in the community, and is probably the most relaxed and stress free he’s been in a long, long time. And if the stressors of big-time college football change any of that, it would be a very tough sell.

It would probably take moving heaven and Earth to get him back into the college ranks, but if any program can do it, USC would most likely be on that short list. It would at least have to be an intriguing challenge, and a toy that would be fun to tinker with for Meyer.

We’ll keep an eye on this as news or reaction from Meyer himself comes out. Right now, it is all just speculation, and right now USC has a head coach that’s still trying to get his team to finish 2019 strong.
