A lot of questions have come up about the skill and talent that Washington quarterback Dwayne Haskins has, and whether or not he will be a legitimate franchise quarterback in the NFL After a tumultuous rookie season, it’s fair to speculate, but unfair to blame all of the misgivings of Washington’s 2019 season on the rookies. Many people are quick to forget what type of player he was in college and even high school for that matter.
When talking to Fox Sports’ Colin Cowherd earlier this week, former Ohio State Buckeyes coach Urban Meyer did what he could to remind everyone of the talent that Haskins possesses. When asked who was the best high school QB he’d ever see as a coach, Meyer’s answer was none other than Haskins himself.
“It’s Dwayne Haskins if you talk about pure ability to throw the football,” Meyer said. “When I went to his junior workout right after his junior season, I sat there for two hours and watched this kid throw, and he was better than most college quarterbacks that I’ve ever had in my systems or coached. And he was the one where I remember, I got in my car and I called whoever and said ‘This one is done. He’ll be an NFL quarterback.’ Because he was so well developed in high school.”
We weren’t able to see much of that arm talent from Haskins in his rookie season, but he rarely got the change to air it out while dealing with a restrictive playbook and a makeshift offensive line in front of him. Going forward, with Scott Turner’s air-raid offense now being put into place, don’t be surprised if you get to see Haskins let it loose a bit more. We’ve seen videos of it this summer, and chances are that you’ll get to see it come to fruition this fall.
