Urban Meyer has high praise for former Ohio State players Haskins, McLaurin, Young, now on the Washington Redskins

Former Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer has more time to talk to players and get involved with the NFL these days. Instead of putting together juggernaut college football teams that beat Michigan like a drum every year, he now spends his time with family and as an analyst, but he has time for many other things.

He recently took some time out to discuss a trio of former Buckeyes with Redskins.com that are now a part of the nucleus in Washington. Quarterback Dwayne Haskins and receiver Terry McLaurin were drafted last year, while defensive end Chase Young was taken as the No. 2 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft.

The trio makes up three of the best players on the Redskins, and if anyone can provide some insight on each, it’s their former head coach at Ohio State.

It’s no surprise Myer has high regard for all three, but it’s interesting to hear what he says about each, and what makes them tick.

Here is what Meyer says about all three.

Next … Meyer’s comments on Dwayne Haskins

Urban Meyer’s comments on Redskins’ QB Dwayne Haskins

On Dwayne Haskins’ meteoric rise in college

“[They – Ryan Day and Mark Pantoni, Director of Player Personnel] said we needed to start looking at quarterbacks and transfers because of Dwayne,” Meyer told Redskins.com. “I said, ‘Well, where’s Dwayne going?’ and they said the NFL. I said ‘you’ve got to be kidding me. He’s only been a starter for five games.'”

On Haskins’ development

“The only thing he (Haskins) lacked was maturity and experience, and that’s coming,” Meyer said.

Urban Meyer’s comments on Redskins’ WR Terry McLaurin

On Terry McLaurin’s secret to success

“He has an incredible mom and dad. Faith is No. 1 in his life,” he told Brian Mitchell. “Just think about in your lifetime when you run into someone [who has] faith No. 1 in their life and they come from incredible parents. What is the chance that kid is going to be great? I think it’s…near 100%.”

On McLaurin’s hard work

“He’s developed a skill set that’s incredible,” Meyer said. “He’s always had the speed, but he’s just so strong, he’s worked on his ball skills, and he’s just a tremendous ballplayer.”

Next … Meyer’s comments on Chase Young

Urban Meyer’s comments on new Redskins’ DE Chase Young

On Chase Young’s natural ability

“You’re getting arguably the most talented guy to go to the NFL in quite a while. I’m not saying he’s the best player yet, because he has to earn that…but just as far as God-given height, size, strength, speed…you got it all,” Meyer said.

On the one thing Young can’t do well

“He’s a terrible dancer. He’s awful,” said Meyer. “I don’t usually say this, but he’s terrible. He’s not good at that.”

That, by the way, did not sit well with Young. His reaction was swift and decisive on Twitter, just like his pass-rushing abilities.

It should be fun watching these three develop together in the nation’s capital over the next few years. Something tells me the Washington Redskins have a much bigger following in Ohio than before with this trio setting the bar.
