Urban Meyer didn’t give Tim Tebow the most ringing of endorsements about making 53-man roster

The Jacksonville Jaguars made a lot of big news during the offseason as they hired Urban Meyer to be their new head coach and then drafted Trevor Lawrence No. 1 overall to be their franchise QB.

Oh, and they also signed Tim Tebow to a one-year deal and he’s going to try to make the team as a tight end, a position he has never played.

Meyer recently said Tebow has done a “decent’ job learning the position during minicamps. “Decent” isn’t what anyone or anything ever really wants to be called. If someone told you a pizza place was decent, would you go check it out? Didn’t think so.

Well, Meyer was a guest on USA Today Sports’ weekly show “Sports Seriously” this week and was asked by Mackenzie Salmon what Tebow would have to show him to make the 53-man roster.

He didn’t exactly sing Tebow’s praises:

The last thing you just said is the tough part – there’s 53. And that’s new to me. That’s the reality of the NFL – that you have 90 players. So to me he’s one of 90. What’s the difference between him and the other 40 guys trying to make the team? To me it’s all the same. This is their livelihood. This is a job. This is a way to make a living and the reality is a good percentage of your roster is going to get cut or transitioned out of here which to me, that’s completely new. In college you’ve got your 85-95 guys and you fit them them in and you put the puzzle together. It’s much different here.

Yeah, that didn’t sound like Meyer has fallen in love with what Tebow – who will be 34 in August and hasn’t played in the NFL in 9 years – has shown so far at tight end.

This is is all starting to really feel like Tebow isn’t going to make the team, which wouldn’t be a surprise at all.

But hey, we’ll have to see how things go during training camp and then the preseason.
