Urban Meyer apparently told Vic Fangio that the NFL is like facing Alabama every week

Aside from pandering to the nostalgia of the local fanbase, the Jacksonville Jaguars’ decision to hire Urban Meyer as head coach made little sense from the start. And through two games, it’s not looking any better for the former Florida Gators and Ohio State coach.

Even his small talk with opposing coaches manages to make Meyer look like he’s in over his head.

During Wednesday’s post-practice press conference, Denver Broncos head coach Vic Fangio was discussing the challenge of facing any opponent in the NFL. And in doing so, he recalled part of the conversation he had with Meyer before Sunday’s game — a 23-13 Broncos win.

Meyer apparently told Fangio that the NFL has been like facing Alabama every game.

Fangio obviously didn’t mean for the remark to make Meyer look bad, but it sort of did anyway.

Meyer had only coached one NFL regular season game at the time of that conversation — a loss to the Texans! — and he was already viewing the week-to-week challenge on the same scale as prepping for Nick Saban’s Alabama teams.

That’s not great for the Jaguars’ hopes this year — not that those hopes are particularly high.

But hey, Meyer did manager to get a couple wins against Saban during his college coaching career. Maybe the Falcons and Jets games will be more like Vanderbilt weeks than Alabama weeks for him.
