Urban Gardens: nurseries of self-reliance

The USAID Urban Gardens Program in Ethiopia ended in September after creating 500 community and school vegetable gardens. The gardens helped women and children affected by HIV and AIDS–many of them ostracized because of their HIV-status–by affording them the means to improve their health, bolster their livelihoods, and overcome social stigma.

The holistic program worked hand-in-hand with 51 Ethiopian organizations to train gardeners on practical agricultural approaches, good nutrition, and financial savings. Between 2008 and 2011 alone, it reached 34,200 households and more than 118,000 orphans and vulnerable children.
