LUCKNOW: UPSRTC will install an 'anti-sleep' device in five buses for trial. The device is meant to alert the control room in case the driver dozes off, but not before it tries to wake up the driver.
MD, UPSRTC, Sanjay Kumar has asked for installation of the device in five buses for trial.
It is a sensor-based device which will be placed right in front of the driver in a way that its camera captures the facial expressions of the driver while he is driving and the bus is moving. The device, said the official working with the technical wing of the Corporation, will also be connected to the seat of the driver.
As soon as the driver stops blinking or the device does not notice any movement of the eye it will send out a loud beep and, at the same time, start vibrating the driver's seat to wake him up. An alert will also be sent to the control room at the same time.
"All this will be done within five seconds or so," said the official.
If the driver still does not respond or is too drowsy the alert sent out to the control room will come handy because then the conductor of the bus will be contacted and asked to reach out to the driver.
The device will help control freak accidents due to `human error' where the driver, mostly on night duty and driving around 3am to 5am in the morning, gets lethargic.
It will also help the Corporation keep a watch on the health of their drivers as those who err may be doing so because of some health-related issues. The schedule of duty that is assigned to drivers may also be the reason for the driver dozing off while driving.
