Upside Down House where people can take 'zero gravity selfies' coming to Metrocentre

A topsy-turvy visitor attraction which gives people the chance to take ‘zero gravity’ selfies is coming to the Metrocentre in Gateshead.

The Upside Down House is a two-storey inverted building which visitors get to explore so that they can take pictures that make them look as if they are floating.

The firm launched last year with a property in Bournemouth and has recently opened at the Lakeside shopping centre in Essex run by property firm intu.

Now intu has extended that partnership to include another six of its shopping centres, including the Metrocentre.

Each upside down house will feature a number of different rooms for people to explore, with unique interior and exterior designs to reflect the character of its local surroundings. The attractions also change with the seasons and put on special events at different times of the year.

Roger Binks, customer experience director at intu, said: “The Upside Down House is a fun experience for all the family where your world is literally turned upside down.

“It has been a huge draw at intu Lakeside and perfectly complements the transformation of this much-loved centre into a place to relax, unwind, eat, play and shop. We run some of the country’s most popular retail destinations so really see its potential to thrive at intu’s high footfall locations across the UK.”

As part of the partnership with intu, Upside Down Houses will open at properties including Manchester’s Trafford Centre, Braehead in Glasgow and Merry Hill in Dudley.

The Metrocentre house will open early next year.

The Upside Down House is the latest visitor attraction to be planned for the Metrocentre as it tries to counter the decline on the High Street with non-retail tenants that bring people to shopping centres.

An Angry Bird-themed crazy golf centre and Clip’n’Climb are both opening in the centre’s yellow mall this year.

Tom Dirse, CEO of Upside Down House UK, said: “I am extremely excited to announce this exclusive partnership with intu. It is an astonishing opportunity to showcase our unique attraction in more high footfall locations now than ever.

“This will give everyone around the UK the chance to experience what it’s like to walk on the ceiling, take amazing photos and share them with your friends and families online and in person.”
