'Upset' family claim they had to cancel camping holiday after being told their Staffordshire bull terriers were not welcome

A family from Sandfields, Port Talbot, claim they had to cancel their holiday getaway in the Gower after being told the campsite did not allow the breed of dogs they own.

Jake Blackburn said he booked Oxwich Camping Park for eight people alongside his family's three Staffordshire bull terriers - Bleu, Zane and Zeus.

They booked the weekend escape for this coming Friday to Sunday, but became concerned when they claimed they saw on the venue's social media pages that "large dogs and certain dog breeds" were not allowed at the site. They claimed the posts had since disappeared from the page.

The Camping Park is a popular tourist destination praised for its isolated location with a 10-minute walk to Oxwich Beach, one of Gower's most expansive stretches of sand.

But the 23-year-old claimed that upon phoning the camping park to enquire over which breeds were not allowed to stay, he was told their family's dogs would not be welcome.

Jake claimed that on the phone he was told "not that breed".

He said: "We have never been put in a situation where we have been turned away because of the dog. I think there is such a negative association towards Staffordshire bull terriers. At the end of the day, it's all down to how the owner brings them up, we were all really upset by the decision.

"Bleu is adorable and the love of my life, she wakes up with me before I go to work and waits for me to make her scrambled eggs. These dogs aren't nasty, evil or vicious. They are the most caring dog breed I have ever come across, it is really disappointing."

The Staffordshire bull terrier club website says the breed often gets tarnished by the reputation of pit bulls.

It states: "Staffordshire bull terriers are an entirely different breed, but many people will lump all of these similar-looking dogs together as potentially dangerous. Thus, Staffordshire bull terriers may be targeted for 'banning' in certain areas, or refusal of homeowner insurance policies."

With the Blackburn family dogs ranging from eight months to three years old their trip was scheduled to be a family getaway.

Jake added: "It's rare that me and my girlfriend have weekends off with the family so we wanted to use this weekend with the dogs being there and a change of scenery but now we have had to look elsewhere."

WalesOnline contacted Oxwich Camping Park for comment but they declined.
