PANAJI: Hurdles caused by ongoing infrastructure work for a casino and problems due to constricted space to manoeuvre ferry boats onto the Panaji jetty’s ramp triggered protests by commuters on Tuesday. Irked with the irregularity in the frequency of the Panaji to Betim ferry service, commuters marched to the office off the Captain of Ports and demanded uninterrupted service on the route.
“Our rights to ferry transportation are being compromised to keep casinos happy. Commuters deserve a proper assurance on whether or not the ferry services are operational for the public,” one commuter said.
“I have instructed my superintendent and we are going to restart the services. Our technical team will work out how to maneuver the ferry keeping in check the wind and sail conditions,” Captain of ports, James Braganza said.
The agitated commuters, however, refused to budge unless a written assurance was provided.
