Uproar on Liveline as callers slam 'fornication' in new RTE show Normal People

Lenny Abrahamson's Normal People caused uproar on Joe Duffy today with many listeners horrified by the sex scenes.

The series is a 12-part TV adaptation of Sally Rooney's novel and tells the story of two teens from different backgrounds, who fall in love but struggle with their feelings.

Tommy was the biggest star of the controversy talking to Joe labelling the programme pornographic.

Marianna (Daisy Edgar Jones) and Connell (Paul Mescal) play two young awkward Leaving Cert students who fall in love but aren’t sure of their feelings.

Mary said: “I imagine it was something you’d expect to see in a porno movie, certainly not for family viewing.

Tommy Banks was disgusted and went as far as saying sex was responsible for the epidemic.

He told Joe: “I feel it was a bit pornographic maybe in one or two scenes.

"I feel that young actress is being exploited and used just to get the ratings because it’s exploitation and giving the wrong message to young people.

“It’s no wonder there are so many crisis pregnancies, if this is supposed to be the normal now for young people.

“I have two daughters now and if they think that’s what’s going on in secondary school, It’s shocking.

“It’s morally wrong, it’s fornication, it’s the national broadcaster promoting fornication.

People on Twitter told Tommy to go back to the 60’s.

Weldon Costello thought the programme was eloquent adding: “The acting and chemistry between both the young people is excellent, Ireland will be woken up.

Tommy chimed in: “Is promiscuity the new normal?”

“The young people almost think immorality is the norm, that’s the sad thing.

“You see them coming out of pubs in Temple Bar vomiting and having sex on the side of the street.

“Is that the normal we want in our country, as far as I can see this country is getting more barbaric.

“It’s no wonder we have a pandemic.”

David Weaver told how it was a cringe fest in his house: “I had to cringe to think of teenagers jumping into this sexual thing, as a parent I had to switch the channel.

“Is this what they call normal, you send your children to school in a school uniform, they’re young teenagers, there’s things they could be doing, football, drama or tennis and we’re saying no they just need to be sexualised.

Religion teacher Molly from Clare praised Normal People: “It really portrayed two people in love of an age consenting.

“I don’t understand where these guys are coming from, in this day and age we’ve moved along from the word fornication.”

Meanwhile Daisy let slip how she had to “awkwardly snog the air” when she auditioned for the show.

The revelation came to light when a fan tweeted about the show’s main characters kissing for the first time.

Daisy, 21, tweeted: “This scene was my first audition scene and I had to awkwardly snog mid air during my self tape,' alongside a laughing emoji.”

24-year old Kildare native Paul Mescal recently revealed what it was like to film full-frontal sex scenes with Daisy, saying he and his co star Daisy felt 'empowered' by the 'honest and truthful' nature of them.

Normal People continues on Tuesday at 10.15pm on RTE One
