Upper Hunter Shire Council lifts Scone no-fire order

Upper Hunter Shire Council has lifted a no-fire order for parts of Scone, following an investigation into a suspected fuel leak from a petrol station into the town's sewerage system.

Residents were advised to not light any fires, naked flames, or have ignition sources in the open along the underground sewer line between the Kelly Street and Mount Street intersection, to the Bill Rose Sports Complex.

"There is no evidence of any significant amounts of fuel entering the Scone sewer network this morning," a council spokesperson said on Monday.

Council advised on Saturday that the measure was a precaution to minimise the risk of an out-of-control fire coming into contact with the sewer lines.

"Please be assured that if there was an unacceptable risk, residents would have been evacuated," a council spokesperson said.

"Fuel gas levels within the sewer have been monitored by Fire & Rescue NSW since Thursday, April 16, 2020.

"As of 5.30pm Friday, April 17, gas levels in the sewer had dropped to a safe level.

"Fire & Rescue NSW handed over gas monitoring, flushing and ventilation responsibilities to Council.

"As of 7am Saturday, April 18, the fuel levels in the sewer pipes have dropped further."

Updates will continue to be available through the Upper Hunter Shire Council website and Facebook page.
