UPM 'confident' North Wales newsprint plant will be sold with no plans to reduce workforce

UPM says it is "confident" it will sell its major newsprint operation in North Wales.

The Finnish company announced it was selling the 200 employee paper mill at Shotton on Deeside on Wednesday.

Business Live contacted the company for reassurances over the potential impact on the workforce.

In response a spokeswoman for UPM said: "We are confident that the attractiveness of the site will lead to a successful sale and will be continuing newsprint paper production in Shotton during the sales process and a potential transition phase.

"The timing is subject to discussions with potential buyers.

"We have not planned to reduce positions related to yesterday’s announcement."

Winfried Schaur, Executive Vice President of UPM Communication Paper, said: "UPM Shotton is well positioned to serve the UK market.

"However, we look for outside opportunities for alternative long-term use of the mill as the newsprint consumption continues to decline.

"The paper machine is technically flexible to support conversion especially into containerboard production."
