
Sheaves of freshly harvested Minami-Uonuma Koshihikari rice are dried on a chairlift at the Ishiuchi Maruyama Ski Area in Minami-Uonuma, Niigata Prefecture. The lift operator came up with the idea in 2004 to make use of the machine during the off-season. The rice travels 400 meters, one way, for four to five days to sweeten in the sun. The Tenku-mai, or sky rice, sells for 10,800, yen tax included, per five kilograms.
