Upgraded charge over fatal Vic stabbing

A 27-year-old woman has had her charges upgraded to murder after a stabbing victim died in hospital. (AAP)

A woman has been charged with murder over a fatal stabbing in Melbourne's northwest.

On Thursday, police confirmed they had upgraded charges against a 27-year-old woman after she allegedly stabbed an older woman at a Ascot Vale home on January 21.

The 57-year-old victim was taken to hospital but died last Friday.

It is believed the two women knew each other.

The accused killer was initially charged with several offences, including seriously causing injury.

She will now face Melbourne Magistrates Court on Monday charged with one count of murder.
