Updated Steelers’ 2019 NFL draft needs ahead of the scouting combine

Dale Zanine-USA TODAY Sports

On Tuesday, the entirety of the NFL, as well as many of the top prospects for the 2019 NFL draft, will descend upon Indianapolis for the NFL scouting combine. This will be an opportunity for teams to get a closer look at many of the top college players while they are poked, prodded, tested, measured and interviewed. The Pittsburgh Steelers’ staff will be out in full force in an attempt to upgrade this offseason. With that, here are our top four draft needs heading into the combine.

Cornerback

In terms of strictly talent and roster depth, cornerback is the thinnest position on the team. Does this mean the Steelers will use a first-round pick on a player to pair up with Joe Haden? It is a real possibility with the 2019 cornerback class. There should be several players for Pittsburgh to keep an eye on.

Wide receiver

With the trading of Antonio Brown something of a foregone conclusion, wide receiver immediately moves up to the No. 2 position of need on the team. JuJu Smith-Schuster is a star but he can’t do it alone. Look for Pittsburgh to take a close look at a wide receiver class deep with physical targets but perhaps short on speed.

Safety

Dale Zanine-USA TODAY Sports

You might think having Sean Davis and Terrell Edmunds is enough but with the amount of sub package defense the Steelers run, their third safety is just as important. Additionally, he needs to be something of a hybrid player almost akin to a linebacker in the dime defense.

Outside linebacker

When you saw linebacker here you might have assumed it would be inside linebacker. But the reality is another edge rusher is a higher priority at this point over another insider linebacker added to that rotation. The Steelers need a player who can give T.J. Watt help coming off the edge and potentially replace Bud Dupree.
