Updated salary cap situation for Cardinals after trade, transition tag

The Arizona Cardinals began the early negotiating window of free agency with a little more than $34 million in salary cap space. Since then, they have designated running back Kenyan Drake with the transition tag and agreed to trade running back David Johnson to the Houston Texans in a deal that brings receiver DeAndre Hopkins.

So what does the Cardinals’ cap picture now look like?

According to Over the Cap, they begin the week with $34.2 million in cap space.

They gain roughly $8.2 million in cap space by trading Johnson. They use $8.5 million in cap space for the transition tag on Drake. They use $12.5 million for Hopkins.

When everything becomes official, the Cardinals are left with about $21.4 million in cap space, which isn’t a lot.

There are moves they can make to increase their cap space. But until they do, they won’t have a ton of room to work with in free agency.
