Updated numbers for DT Jordan Phillips’ contract after restructure

The Arizona Cardinals, to make room for tight end Zach Ertz’ contract under the salary cap for this year, restructured the contract of defensive tackle Jordan Phillips. They converted more than $6.5 million of the remaining salary he is due this year into a bonus and adding an additional two voided years on his deal, saving them $5.2 million cap space.

Here is what we now know about Phillips’ deal.

  • His base salary for the entire 2021 season is now just under $3.5 million. He received a bonus of just more than $6.5 million and his cap hit is just less than $6.8 million. He was scheduled to have a $12 million cap hit.
  • He is scheduled for a $10 million salary in 2022. His cap hit will be just more than $13.3 million.
  • Because of three voiding years (one with the original contract and two more with the restructure), there will be a little more than $5.9 million in remaining cap charges after his deal expires in 2023 unless they agree to a contract extension before that.

With the restructure, it would appear that the team is fairly set on keeping him on the roster another season in 2022. If they were to release or trade him next year, they would no longer have to pay him the $10 million in salary he is due, but there would be more than $9.2 million in dead money charged to the cap for the proration of the money already paid.

They would save only a little more than $4 million in cap space to get rid of his contract.
