Here is an updated look at the Chiefs situation at the running back position following the addition of Carlos Hyde. Keep in mind that both Spencer Ware and Charcandrick West are pending free agents. They’re scheduled to hit free agency when it begins on March 13th.

Carries: 50
Rushing yards: 256
Rush Touchdowns: 4
Receptions: 23
Rec yards: 160
Rec Touchdowns: 2
2019 outlook
Damien Williams will enter the 2019 season as the unquestioned starter for the Chiefs. His contributions down the stretch allowed for the Chiefs high-powered offense to not miss a beat following the loss of their two top running backs. That same in-season play earned an extension with the Chiefs which keeps Williams in Kansas City through the 2020 season. During the playoffs he accounted 250 yards and four touchdowns over the course of two games. He also made Chiefs’ franchise history in the process. The Chiefs have only scratched the surface with Williams. He’s only been the starter for five games, including the playoffs and has plenty of room to grow in this offense.

Carlos Hyde
2018 statistics
Games started: 7
Carries: 172
Rushing yards: 571
Rush Touchdowns: 5
Receptions: 10
Rec yards: 33
Rec Touchdowns: 0
2019 outlook
Carlos Hyde ties Damien Williams for the most veteran running back in the Chiefs backfield. Both players came into the league in 2014. Hyde, however, has 43 career regular season starts while Williams only has seven. That type of experience cannot be understated. Hyde’s 2018 season wasn’t the ideal situation, he signed a 3-year contract with the Cleveland Browns, and was subsequently traded to the Jaguars ahead of the 2018 trade deadline. Both teams had a committee approach at the RB position, and his numbers were down after a season split between the two teams. Hyde will enter the equation as the favorite to win the Chiefs’ RB2 job.

Darrel Williams

Carries: 13
Rushing yards: 44
Rush Touchdowns: 0
Receptions: 3
Rec yards: 3
Rec Touchdowns: 1
2019 outlook
While Hyde might be the favorite to win the No. 2 job because of his experience. Don’t rule out Darrel Williams making a push for the job during training camp. An undrafted rookie in 2018, Williams made a good enough impression for the Chiefs to stash him on the 53-man roster. Williams backed up Damien Williams down the stretch, and he accomplished some terrific production on very limited snaps. Specifically as a pass-catcher, Williams averaged nine yards per reception and a perfect catch rate. At the very worst, Williams will be a change of pace back for the team and occupy the No. 3 spot.

JD Moore
Moore spent the entire 2018 season on the Chiefs’ injured reserve and recorded no statistics on the season.
2019 outlook
Moore joined the Chiefs as a fullback out of LSU. He’s since been listed as a running back by the Chiefs and played mostly as a running back during training camp and the preseason. It’s unclear the teams future plans for this player, but it’s likely that he’ll be working as a training camp body until he proves that he can be something else. He could potentially have a role as a fullback if the team so chooses to play them there.
