Updated Foreign Office advice on destinations safe to visit for holidaymakers this summer

The unforeseen axing of Spain from the government’s quarantine-free list and the subsequent Foreign Office advice to avoid non-essential travel caused more confusion for holidaymakers.

Curbs on travel to Portugal also remain and trips to Cyprus are only popular if tourists pay for a test to clear them of coronavirus infection.

To counter these restrictions travel firms like Jet2 and Tui have massively increased the number of holiday flights to resorts in Greece and Turkey, reports the Liverpool Echo.

European resorts such as Greece, Croatia and Italy are still on the "exempt" countries list, while Caribbean destinations like Aruba and Bahamas are also classed as safe locations.

Holiday booking websites have reported massive declines in the number of searches for holidays to the Spanish mainland and its islands.

However, many People are intent on an overseas holiday this summer and looking at resorts elsewhere for their break.

Emma Coulthurst, travel commentator from holiday price comparison site, TravelSupermarket said: "Prospective holidaymakers, who are looking to holiday overseas, are turning their attentions to Greece, followed by Turkey and Italy and Malta and Croatia.

"Demand also continues for package holidays for next summer, particularly April and May 2021 departures."
