Update on when next travel review of green, red and amber lists takes place

Downing Street has provided an update on when Brits can expect the next review of the green, red and amber lists for travel.

Since the non-essential travel ban was lifted in May, quarantine and coronavirus testing requirements for people returning to the UK from abroad have been based on a traffic light system.

Ministers say Brits should only be travelling to green list countries for holidays, while trips to amber list countries should only be made in exceptional circumstances.

People returning to the UK from an amber country must self-isolate at home for 10 days, take a pre-departure test and two post-arrival tests.

But after Portugal was moved to the amber list following the last review at the beginning of June, there are now no major viable tourist destinations on the quarantine-free green list.

According to the Department of Transport, decisions around which countries are placed on which list are based on a range of factors, including the proportion of a population that had been vaccinated, rates of infection, emerging new variants, and access to reliable scientific data and genomic sequencing.

Brits who have trips booked to places such as Spain, Greece and Italy this year are eagerly awaiting to learn whether their trips can go ahead as planned.

According to Downing Street, the next review of the UK’s travel list of countries is due at the end of this month.

Boris Johnson's official spokesman told reporters today: “There is a three-week review point, so the next checkpoint is coming up at the end of this month.”

The spokesman added that he believed this would be no later than June 28.

The first announcement took place on Thursday, June 3.

That means that if the second review is exactly three weeks later, it will take place on Thursday, June 24.

Changes are likely to come into force early the following week.

So where can I go on holiday now?

Downing Street has said that people should “stick to the green list if considering a foreign holiday, and not travel to amber or red list countries”.

There is no law prohibiting people from travelling to an amber list country for a holiday, but ministers have been urging people not to do so.

Options for green list holidays are limited however, with countries including Australia, New Zealand and Singapore remaining closed to international tourists.
