An update has been issued after two teenagers were arrested in connection with a brutal shooting at a petrol station.

Police were called to the Shell garage, on Borough Road in Birkenhead , shortly after 4pm on Tuesday afternoon to reports that shots had been fired .

It is believed that a gunman opened fire after jumping off the back of a motorbike close to a moving car.

The grey ford attempted to turn around and leave the scene but two of the three shots fired broke through the door and hit the passenger inside.

The victim was later admitted to hospital with multiple gunshot wounds to the shoulder and leg.

"Emergency services were called to the junction of Borough Road and Willmer Road to reports of shots being fired.

"A short time later, a man was admitted to hospital with non-life-threatening shoulder and leg injuries."

Superintendent Gary O’Rourke said: "This investigation is still ongoing and we still need people to come forward with any information about the incident.

“I would also like to remind the community that incidents like this are rare and we are doing all we can to take firearms off our streets.

"What we do know is that most of the community in Birkenhead are law abiding and they are keen to help us and we really appreciate their patience and input while our investigation is going on.

"Our officers are working around the clock, walking the streets, talking to the community, gathering information, searching for guns, and looking for criminal activity in an effort to put a stop to reckless behaviour by criminal groups.

"We will not stop until we know our communities are safer places to live and work.

“We have extra patrols out in Birkenhead and we are also talking to members of the community to find information to help with our investigation.

"90% of firearms discharges are carried out by serious organised crime groups who deal drugs in the area and we need your help to stop this happening around people, including innocent young children, going about their normal daily activities.

“Talk to us, tell us what you know. If you don’t want to talk to us you can contact Crimestoppers anonymously.

"The more information we have from the community the stronger we are together to fight gun crime in our neighbourhoods."
