Update on taxi driver hurt in fatal tunnel crash

Police have issued an update on the taxi driver who was hurt in the fatal Queensway Tunnel crash.

The smash in the Birkenhead Tunnel in the early hours of Sunday, October 17 claimed the lives of 22-year-old Paige Rice and her boyfriend, also in his 20s.

Their Audi S3 hit a taxi and Merseyside Police confirmed the injured taxi driver is not the subject of any criminal inquiries.

Today, police also confirmed the taxi driver is still receiving treatment in hospital more than a month after the crash for "serious but non life-threatening injuries".

On November 17, the family and friends of Paige Rice said their final goodbye at a funeral held at Woodlands Crematorium in Birmingham.

The nail technician from the West Midlands would have been 23 the day before she was laid to rest.

Her mum, Clare said Paige had been in Liverpool visiting her boyfriend, who was the driver of the car and died in hospital a few days later.

Further details about him have not been released.

In the aftermath of the crash Inspector Mark Worrell said: "I would ask anyone who saw anything prior to the collision which could assist our enquiries to get in touch.

"It is believed that prior to entering the tunnel the Audi had been in collision with another vehicle on the Hunter Street roundabout. We are currently examining a number of lines of enquiry."

An online fundraising campaign created to support Paige's family has since raised more than £32,000, including a £5,000 donation from Manchester City and England footballer Jack Grealish.

*Inquiries into the crash remain ongoing. Anyone with any relevant CCTV, dashcam or other footage is asked to contact Merseyside Police on 0151 777 5747, via email (rpiu@merseyside.police.uk), or on the force's social media accounts, with the incident reference number: 21000720520
