Update on Ryan Tubridy's radio show next week with star still off-air amid pay scandal

RTE star Oliver Callan, who has been filling in for Ryan Tubridy on his weekday morning show, has confirmed he will be back on the airwaves next week.

Former Late Late Show host Tubridy remains off air as the national broadcaster’s secret pay scandal continues to deepen.

Callan told listeners on RTE Radio 1 this morning he would be “back here next week.”

He said messages from the public had kept the team going "through everything".

The Monaghan comic said: "Thank you all for your messages all week and the lovely reactions to our guests, you've kept us going and given great encouragement to the team working here, through everything."

Speaking at the Media Committee this week, Interim Deputy Director General Adrian Lynch said it was "impossible" for Ryan Tubridy to return to his show at the moment. He explained that he took the decision to remove Tubs from air as editor-in-chief and in consultation with Director of Content.

Meanwhile, top broadcaster Claire Byrne, who revealed her €280,000 pay earlier this week, paid tribute to RTE staff working to cover the undeclared payments controversy.

Byrne, 47, said it had been an "extremely difficult week".

Closing out her Today With Claire Byrne programme on Friday, she said: "That's it for this week, thank you for listening. You can catch up with anything you might have missed on the RTE Radio app.

"I just want to say a special thank you to the team and everybody who worked on the programme in an extremely difficult week for all of the staff here in RTE."
