Update on Runcorn and Widnes 2020 Bonfire Night fireworks display

Bonfire Night is now less than a month away but it’s expected to be much different this year due to the ongoing coronavirus crisis and the local lockdown restrictions currently in place.

Halton’s annual fireworks display is usually packed with spectators enjoying the view from both the Widnes and Runcorn sides of the River Mersey.

But this year's event has been cancelled, according to Halton Borough Council’s website.

Announcing the news, the council said it is “disappointed” to not be staging the event but that it “is not possible to hold such an event in the current situation”.

Cllr Eddie Jones, the Council’s portfolio holder for Visitor Economy and Events, added that despite delaying the decision for “as long as possible” the council has made the difficult decision to cancel Halton’s firework display.

He said: “We have delayed this decision as long as possible, however we have now, regrettably, had to make the difficult decision to cancel the event, which is enjoyed by many thousands of our residents every year.

“But we have no choice and I am sure local people will understand that, and will not be surprised by the decision. The health and safety of residents and staff is paramount.

“However, we are being positive and looking ahead to next year when Halton becomes the Liverpool City Region Borough of Culture, and a very special celebratory fireworks display is planned as part of a very exciting programme.”

Halton Borough Council added that it hopes to bring back the event next year “with a bang” as part of Halton’s Borough of Culture celebrations.
