Update on Phil Jagielka Bolton rumours as veteran defender asks to train with Wanderers

Bolton Wanderers have been linked with veteran defender Phil Jagielka but it is understood the veteran defender has only asked to train with the club.

Rumours surfaced this morning that the 38-year-old former Everton and Sheffield United defender was reportedly due to have talks with Wanderers over coming in for pre-season.

However, the Manchester Evening News understands that Jagielka has purely asked to come to Wanderers to train as a favour following his release by the Blades and that there is nothing further to it.

Jagielka departed Bramall Lane for the second time this summer having spent the last two campaigns back with the Blades.

The former England defender came through the youth ranks at the Yorkshire side and made more than 250 appearances in his first spell with the club between 2000 and 2007.

He moved to Everton in the summer of 2007 and went on to play almost 400 times for the Goodison Park club in more than a decade.

Sale-born Jagielka played 22 games for the Blades in his second spell with the club, before being released this summer.

Speaking to Sky Sports earlier this summer, Jagielka said he was not ready to hang up his boots.

He said: "It's been a long last 18 or 19 months with the end of the previous season and the start of this one with the Covid outbreak.

"I'm just enjoying a little bit of downtime and then see what's available really. I'm not quite ready to hang the boots up yet.

"It's close but I'll see what's out there and if anything suits, if anyone ticks all the right boxes then hopefully I'll continue playing."
