Update on latest suspect questioned over James Richards murder

The latest suspect to be questioned on suspicion of the murder of James Richards has been released on bail.

The 38-year-old man, from Liverpool, was the fourth person to be arrested in connection with the investigation.

All four suspects have now been released from custody, pending further police inquiries.

The body of Mr Richards was discovered on September 22 - on what would have been his 33rd birthday.

He was found in a private alley between homes on Woodbine Street and Harebell Street in Kirkdale, though the attention of forensics has centred on nearby Reading Street, Reading Close and Elstow Close in recent days.

While Mr Richards, from the L11 area of the city, was discovered at around 1pm on Wednesday, detectives have said they are keeping an open mind about whether he may have suffered the injuries that led to his death on the Tuesday night or the following morning.

Inquiries have also focused on whether he was subjected to an attack in a different location to the alley in which his body was discovered.

Detectives believe the attack was targeted.

The family of Mr Richards paid tribute to him in an emotional statement released on Tuesday.

They said: “A huge hole has been torn in our family. One of our precious ones has been cut down in his prime.

“Brave, loyal, loving and generous, James.

“For just 33 years he brightened our lives and occasionally had our hearts in our mouths, his loss has shattered us all.

“Rest gently our beautiful, bold boy.”

Three people were arrested on suspicion of Mr Richards' murder last week.

The woman was also arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender.
