Update on elderly woman, 89, seriously injured after being knocked down on Gosforth High Street

An elderly woman who was knocked down by a car in Newcastle is still being treated in hospital.

Emergency services were called to Gosforth High Street at around noon on Tuesday to reports a pedestrian had been hit by a car.

An 89-year-old woman was left seriously injured and was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary.

She was believed to have suffered hip and/or leg injuries in the collision.

On Thursday, Northumbria Police confirmed that the woman is still being treated in hospital but her injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

The force has asked any witnesses or anyone who might have information on the crash to come forward.

Sergeant Matt Sykes, from Northumbria Police, said: “This was a serious collision which has left a woman with significant injuries in hospital.

“We are trying to establish a clear picture of the moments leading up to the collision and are appealing for anybody who witnessed the incident or was in the area at the time to get in touch.

“We’d also ask anybody who lives in the area to check their CCTV or dash cam footage – if you see anything that may assist with our inquiries, please give us a call.”

Gosforth High Street reopened to drivers at around 12.40pm.
