Update on condition of man left fighting for life after 'pick-axe' attack

The condition of a man left fighting for his life after suffering a heart attack following a pick-axe assault has improved.

The victim, in his 60s, is believed to have been struck to the head by the handle of a pick-axe during a row in Walton on Sunday.

Following the attack it is understood the man suffered a heart attack that followed left him in a critical condition in hospital.

However, the ECHO understands his health has improved overnight and he is now in a stable condition.

Merseyside Police was called to Emery Street following a report of a group of people fighting in the street at around 1.30pm.

When patrols arrived they found the victim, who had received a head injury after a blow police believe was caused by the handle of a pick-axe.

He then suffered the heart attack.

One woman who lives in the area told the ECHO: "When police arrived I heard children crying their eyes out about what happened. It broke my heart. I wanted to go and get them and take them away.”

Emery Street was cordoned off by police and forensics officers examined the scene in the aftermath of the incident.

Appealing for information on Sunday night, Chief Inspector Jay Crellin said: "You might have witnessed a group of people fighting in the street and you may have information that could help with our investigation.

"We are also interested in any dascham or mobile phone footage.

“We take assaults like this seriously and the only way we can find out exactly what happened here today is if the community tell us what they know as this is a residential area and it was daylight.”

Detectives are appealing to anyone who has any information to send Merseyside Police a direct message on Twitter (via @MerPolCC), by calling the force on 101 quoting crime reference number 0410 of 26/1/20 or contacting Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
