Update after women arrested over guns and ammunition found near field

Two women who were arrested over guns and ammunition found in a field were released from custody.

The arrests were made after officers seized a shotgun, a rifle and ammunition during a raid in Kirkby on April 28.

Witnesses watched on as police swarmed a field, close to Perimeter Road, shortly before 10.30am last Thursday.

Pictures at the scene showed officers searching the field, and what looked like a barn, for most of the afternoon.

One witness told the ECHO : "I was driving to work and I saw two police vans, two police cars and two unmarked cars.

"There were police searching the area with sticks walking around the barn, I returned around 10:30 and they were still there."

Another witness said they saw a fleet of vehicles, including Matrix vans and forensic teams at the scene at around 1pm.

They said that officers appeared to be focusing on a barn in one of the fields.

Later that day, Merseyside Police said: "We can confirm we have executed a firearms warrant in Kirkby, this morning (Tuesday, 28 April).

"At around 10.20am, a warrant was executed at an address on Perimeter Road and a shotgun, a rifle, and ammunition were discovered following a search of the property.

"Two women have been arrested in connection to this matter."

On Monday, just days after the arrests, police told the ECHO that the two women had been released from custody under investigation.

“Our work has not stopped in the relentless pursuit of criminal activity across Merseyside and we are grateful to the community in helping us seek out criminals and put them before the courts.

"Please keep talking to us and together we can make a difference to the safety of our community."
